Living in Colorado gives me a greater appreciation for winter sports. Because sometimes it snows into May, you have to be able to enjoy it or else it's going to be a looong winter. So on top of skiing, I also snowshoe. (I've even gotten out my old skates and attempted skating on the frozen ponds.)
There are a lot of kids out there who also love winter sports, but when I researched children's books about snowboarding, I hardly found any current ones. So I wrote this story and decided to publish it myself!
I was looking for an illustrator who wasn't afraid to use bold colors (since we are also releasing this on Kindle) and who could capture the exuberance of snowboarding. I had to look no further than my local SCBWI chapter to find Shaundra Shultz. Shaundra was key in developing the Rabbit and Penguin characters, and totally got that we needed an added layer of humor which she delivered through Penguin and her background details. She was a dream to work with and together we published a cool children's book!
Fresh Snow! is about a Penguin who's trying to keep up with his pal, Rabbit, who loves everything about winter, especially snowboarding. For parents, it's a great book to read before heading to the slopes (or keep in the car for the ride home). For teachers, the book ties in to the theme of winter and the things kids can do in the snow. For therapists, it's a discussion starter about trying something new to discover what you're good at and what you truly like. For snowboard instructors, it's a simple introduction to the sport for the young ones. For kids, it's a fun way to learn snowboarding terms (there's a glossary in the back).
To celebrate the release of my new book, I'm giving away a free signed copy just in time before the ski resorts open.
